National Speaker Coming to SJCA Upper Campus! 1/17/2011

We are pleased to announce that a Catholic national expert, from our diocese, will be visiting the SJCA upper campus to discuss digital technology safety and responsibility. He will visit on Monday, January 17, 2011.

Mr. Eric Szatkowski will address the middle school and high school separately, each for approximately 60 minutes. His presentation will include the following, modified for the appropriate age level:

Young people will learn the value of being safe and respectful online and using their cell phones, as well as the real-life consequences of making bad decisions in the digital age. Real case examples will demonstrate the risks of online predators, social networking sites like Facebook and My Space, sexting and texting, cyber bullying, and online gaming.

About Eric Szatkowski
Eric Szatkowski is a Special Agent with the Wisconsin Department of Justice/Division of Criminal Investigation for approximately 20 years. He’s currently assigned to the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Milwaukee.
Eric’s dynamic presentations on Internet and cell phone exploitation of children have been seen by more than 20,000 people in Wisconsin and the US. Audiences include police officers, prosecutors, child welfare advocates, correctional and social workers, civic groups, business professionals, doctors, parents, and middle school and high school students.
He has been a guest on the Tyra Banks Show in Los Angeles and CNN Tonight with Connie Chung in New York City. Eric has also appeared on “Living Our Faith” with Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan (currently Archbishop of New York), and has been interviewed by countless newspapers, radio and television stations across Wisconsin and the Midwest.
Eric’s presentations inspired the drafting and passage of new legislation in 2006, Wisconsin Assembly Bill 942. This law significantly increased the levels of felonies for online child exploitation, increased maximum prison penalties, and implemented presumptive minimum prison terms for online predators. In 2010, he organized and coordinated the first week-long schools for WI DOJ to train police officers in the investigation of online child exploitation.
You can read more about Mr. Szatkowski here.

University of Dayton Question Mark Competition

The University of Dayton announces its Question Mark Competition!

The University of Dayton is devoted to the search for knowledge — a search that begins by asking big questions. We believe asking questions enriches people, communities and even the world. This inquisitive outlook is what college — and life — is about. So as you prepare to embark on your college journey, tell us about the topics that pique your curiosity and the question you have always wanted to answer.

Upload a video explaining, showing, telling, singing or cartooning what your question is — and how you would go about investigating it if you had the opportunity to do so. Share your video with friends and family through Facebook, Twitter, e-mail or word-of-mouth, and collect as many votes as possible between February 1 and March 31, 2011. The 10 videos with the most votes will be reviewed by a committee at the University of Dayton, and the top three videos will be awarded prizes towards the investigation of their questions and the grand prize winner will receive a $40,000 scholarship to the University of Dayton

Please visit admission.udayton.edu/yourquestion/  for more information about this contest.

Careers Inc Workshop

ATTENTION SENIORS!

SJCA is pleased to announce the Careers Inc workshop presented by Ms. Jacquelyn Irvine of  DeVry University on December 16 at 8:00 am in the Buri-Nelson.
Careers Inc. is an interactive workshop that provides opportunities for collaboration and competition among students. During the workshop students will:
· Use a PDA to interact and get a glimpse of their future
· Find what their strengths and weaknesses are by discovering their personality type and performing competitions of real world challenges
· Discover fast growing careers that they may have never considered
Ms. Irvine will guide the workshop in the direction that best suits our students’ questions, concerns and interests.
All seniors will attend this workshop. The workshop will be about 35 minutes and will take place on 12/16/2010, at 8am, in the Buri Nelson.

This is a fun, free and informative activity to help
students learn more about themselves and about the
careers that will best suit their talents and interests!

Welcome to Term 2!

Congratulations to all SJCA students on making it through finals!

Just a few reminders as we begin Term 2:

Seniors-
Please pay attention to each school's application deadline, as many are approaching in the coming weeks. Also, please review your application carefully before submission (either online or paper).  Ask yourself these questions:
  • Did I sign my application?
  • Do I need to send a check for the application fee?
  • Does this school require an essay or personal statement?
  • Do I need to send letters of recommendation?
  • Is there a form that I need my Guidance Counselor to fill out and send with my transcripts?
  • Do I need to have ACT/SAT send out my scores?
Make sure that you gather ALL of the materials that you wish to have sent with your application, including the address of the college or university you are applying to, and turn it into Mrs. Shuler.  We want the admissions process to be smooth for you, and ensuring that your application is complete can reduce the likelihood of pieces of your application being misplaced which may delay that important decision!

While your ACT and/or SAT scores are on your transcript, look closely at each school’s policy regarding test score submission.  Some schools, including those in the UW system, require that your test scores be sent directly from the testing agency.

ALSO, please notify your counselors when you are admitted to schools and when you receive scholarships. We want to hear about your accomplishments!!
Juniors-

As you begin to register and take the ACT, make sure to enter our school’s code, 501007, in the high school section of the test.   ACT will then automatically send us a sticker with your score, which we will place on your permanent record.  We use this record to make copies of their transcript for colleges, new jobs, etc.

Keep up the great work, everyone!

Veterans Day

A belated Happy Veterans Day to all those who serve and have served, as well as their friends and family.

We had a wonderful Veterans Day celebration at the Lower Campus. We started the day with a celebratory Mass, powerpoint presentation and patriotic songs from our K5 and 1st grade students. Colonel Todd Garlick, father of one of our upper campus students, gave an inspiring speech.

After Mass, our 4th and 5th grade students were pleased to welcome Colonel Garlick, Major Evangeline Rosel, Senior Chief Petty Officer Andrew Weaver and Senior Master Sergeant Spencer Parker for a Question and Answer session. This shared experience was truly meaningful for all.

Schedule Changes

As Term 1 final exams approach and we begin Term 2, we have been received many requests for schedule changes.  Please note that, due to the small size of St. Joe's and the limited number of course sections available, only school-initiated changes based upon teacher and administrative recommendations will be considered.  This policy is also outlined in the Student-Parent Handbook on page 13.

If you have any concerns about the difficulty of any of your child's courses, we encourage you to contact the teacher.

Final Exams Info and Tips

As we approach the close of Term 1, it's time to begin preparing for finals!

Remember that final exams will be held on Wednesday, November 17 and Thursday, November 18. School will be closed on Friday, November 19 for teacher inservice/grading. More information on finals will be forthcoming.

We want you to do the best you can and to feel minimum anxiety and stress. Her are some tips to best prepare:
  • Time management. Plan, plan, plan. Before finals begin, get out your calendar and schedule specific study times for your classes. Stick to the schedule!
  • Schedule in study breaks. Don't plan to study non-stop. It isn't healthy and it won't help you to understand the information. It actually may cause you to understand less! When you write your schedule, include short study breaks to help you recharge. You'll feel so much better and will be able to concentrate so much more.
  • Take advantage of study sheets and study sessions. Just be careful not to use these as crutches. They're not supposed to replace studying.
  • Schedule in sleep. Very few people can function well on three hours of sleep a night. Most cannot. You'll do much better during exams if your mental state is good, and sleep is essential for this.
  • Exercise. There's no better source for stress relief. Just don't overdo it to the point that you're procrastinating heavily. Go for short, stress-relieving activities, like a nice walk outside while the weather is still nice.
  • Prioritize. After you receive finals information from your teachers, you will have a limited amount of time to study. Prioritize your classes. If you are trying earn an A in AP Chemistry, plan to study for that test a little more than your other classes.
  • Form effective study groups. Notice the word effective. Spend time in a study group that will promote shared learning and tutoring. Don't just meet with your friends to talk or copy notes!
  • Free your schedule. As much as possible, eliminate other responsibilities. Work fewer hours. Put off social events. But don't neglect your chores at home!
  • Ask your teacher for help. If you're confused about your notes or the readings, go to the resident expert. This works much better if you don't put off studying until the last minute. It's a good idea to read through all of your notes before you start to study, so that you can inquire early about things that confuse you. Your teachers will be happy to help you, but not if you ask at the last minute.
  • KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE. What's the worst thing that can happen if you don't do well on this test? Excessive stress will cause unneccesary worry and hurt your performance on tests, so as much as you can, relax. And if you're having serious problems with anxiety during final exams, seek help at your school's counseling center. This is a common problem that schools are well equipped to help you with.
Good luck on your exams. Take your time, study hard and R-E-L-A-X. Please don't hesitate to talk to your guidance counselors or your teachers if you are feeling stressed out.

Update: The Psychology Club is offering relaxation tips during lunch hours. Check it out!
